Ben Davis March 21, How is Beowulf introduced How do others view him? Why is the villain introduced in Beowulf before the hero? He has accepted what the years offered and never murdered his own, direct references to the sermon.
Finally, he has given his life for the treasure that, he thinks, will go to his people. Ironically, the treasure will be buried with Beowulf and will be of no more use to the Geats than it was to the dragon.
Beowulf wants to see some of the riches. Hoping to please his king, Wiglaf leaves for a moment and enters the barrow. The scene inside is reminiscent of the ogres' cave after Beowulf killed Grendel's mother. Both hold impressive treasure that will come to no use. Wiglaf sees wonderful tapestry, jewels, gold in various forms, and a golden standard hanging over the riches, emitting a strange light like that in the cave. Wiglaf brings some of the treasure to his leader who is near death.
Beowulf's final words ff. Thanking God, he tells Wiglaf that he wants his ashes buried in a mound on Whale's Cliff Hrones-naesse near the sea where passing sailors might look upon it and call it "Beowulf's Barrow" Biowulfes biorh. The dying king then symbolically passes his position on to Wiglaf by giving the young man the armor, rings, and gold collar that Beowulf is wearing.
Wiglaf is the last of the Waegmundings, Beowulf's clan, but he has earned the right to rule, not inherited it. He must follow his ancestors. The water-monsters are gone, no water weighs on him now. He sees the size of the she-monster, Grendel's mother, as she turns to throw herself on him. He strikes at her with his sword, a mighty blow to the side of her head - but the blade does not bite. For the first time Hrunting, that famous weapon, fails in battle. Beowulf flings it to the floor and grabs Grendel's mother by the shoulders, meaning to trust to his own strength.
He is bursting with anger and does not think of his own life. He throws her down but she trips him and he stumbles. She is down on his back and has drawn her knife with its bright blade.
His mailshirt saves him then, its rings linked together so closely and cleverly the knife-point can find no way in. At that moment Beowulf sees the one thing that can save him and bring him success, a sword form the olden days of the Giants lying among some armour not far away. His hand reaches for it. Beowulf bids farewell to his men and sets off wearing a mail-shirt and a helmet to fight the dragon. He shouts a challenge to his opponent, who emerges from the earth.
Man and dragon grapple and wrestle amid sheets of fire. Only one, Wiglaf, feels enough loyalty to come to the aid of his king. Wiglaf chides the other warriors, reminding them of their oaths of loyal service to Beowulf. Now the time has come when their loyalty will be tested, Wiglaf declares, and he goes by himself to assist his lord.
Beowulf strikes the dragon in the head with his great sword Naegling, but the sword snaps and breaks. The blow is fatal, and the writhing serpent withers. But no sooner has Beowulf triumphed than the wound on his neck begins to burn and swell.
