Temperature determined by averaging the 24 hourly readings or by adding the maximum and minimum temperatures for a hour period and dividing by 2. Daily Temperature Range. The difference in a day's maximum and minimum temperatures.
Monthly Mean Temperature. Calculated by adding together the daily means for each day of the month and dividing by the number of days in the month. Annual Mean Temperature. An average of the 12 monthly means. Annual Temperature Range. Computed by finding the difference between the warmest and codes mean temperatures. Temperature Gradient. The amount of temperature change per unit of distance. Closely spaced isotherms indicate a rapid rate of temperature change, whereas more widely spaced lines indicate a more gradual rate of change.

An isotherm is a line of connecting points of equal temperatures. They are used to observe the distribution of air temperatures over a vast area. Why should isotherms be smoothly drawing curves? With isotherms, isobars make it easier to read and analyze weather maps. Looking at patterns of temperature and pressure can help determine weather conditions a few days ahead.

Comparing the difference in the values of the isotherms between seasons, the smallest temperature ranges are found near the equator while the largest are found over high latitude continental interiors, Siberia for example.
The difference in temperature across latitudes is the latitudinal temperature gradient. The winter hemisphere January for the Northern hemisphere, July for the Southern Hemisphere has the larger temperature gradients as shown by the closely spaced isotherms.
Also note that the temperature gradient is steepest in the midlatitude to subarctic geographical zones.
