Christians, perhaps because they call themselves Christians and believe in Christianity, like to claim ownership of Christ.

It thus comes as a huge surprise to many of them - my friend included - to discover that the world's second-largest faith, Islam, also stakes a claim to him. He is referred to by name in as many as 25 different verses of the Quran and described as the "Word" and the "Spirit" of God.

No other prophet in the Quran, not even Muhammad, is given this particular honour. In fact, Islam reveres both Jesus and his mother, Mary Joseph appears nowhere in the Islamic narrative of Christ's birth. She is the only woman mentioned by name in Islam's holy book and a chapter of the Quran is named after her. But the real significance of Mary is that Islam also considers her a virgin and endorses the Christian concept of the Virgin Birth.

For Muslims, however, the Virgin Birth is not evidence of Jesus's divinity, only of his unique importance as a prophet and a messiah. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. His mother was a woman of truth. They had both to eat their daily food. Recount My favour to thee and to thy mother. I strengthened thee with the holy spirit, so that thou didst speak to the people in childhood and in maturity.

I taught thee the Book and Wisdom, the Law and the Gospel and behold! And behold! So eat and drink and cool thine eye. Then she came with him [the infant Jesus] unto her people, carrying him. They said, "O Mary! Thou hast brought an amazing thing! O sister of Aaron! Thy father was not an evil man, nor was thy mother unchaste. They said, "How shall we speak to one who is yet a child in the cradle? He [Jesus] said, "Truly I am a servant of God.

He has given me the Book and made me a prophet. He has made me blessed wheresoever I may be, and has enjoined upon me prayer and almsgiving so long as I live, and [has made me] dutiful toward my mother. And He has not made me domineering, wretched. Peace be upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I am raised alive! So although Muslims do not believe that Jesus is the son of God — a critically important distinction between Muslim and Christian views of him — Muslims do revere Jesus as an important prophet.
